Why did the NTTA move to cashless tolling?

All-electronic toll collection, or cashless tolling, is expected to improve mobility with increased capacity on NTTA roads by eliminating stop-and-go traffic and by moving traffic more efficiently through the toll plazas and entrance/exit ramps.

What are the benefits of cashless tolling?

Cashless tolling improves air quality, fuel efficiency and time savings through reduced stop-and-go traffic and idling at toll booths, and it also heightens motorist and employee safety through the elimination of merging and weaving. There is also a operational savings over time for the NTTA that we will reinvest in other North Texas mobility projects.

What is the difference between TollTag and ZipCash accounts?

TollTag customers pay their tolls electronically through the use of a transponder mounted on their cars’ windshields. Customers maintain a prepaid account to cover tolls. Each time a vehicle with a TollTag passes through a tolling point, the applicable toll is deducted from the account.

ZipCash is NTTA’s “drive-now, pay-by-invoice” option. Tolls are billed at the higher rate to the registered owner of the vehicle at a later date. ZipCash and cash customers pay 50 percent more than TollTag customers.

How long will construction last?
Construction will continue on the cashless tolling conversion project through 2011 as toll booths and other equipment are removed from the Dallas North Tollway. NTTA staff and contractors are working to minimize construction delays by working during off-peak and evening hours Some delays will be necessary and will be communicated to customers as soon as possible. For construction updates, call the NTTA Information Line at 214.224.3030 or visit www.ntta.org. You can also sign up to receive the NTTA’s Cashless Tolling e-newsletter.

Will you be closing lanes during construction?

Yes, we will need periodic lane closures during the conversion; however we will make every effort to close lanes during non-peak driving periods. Customers may call the NTTA Information Line at 214.224.3030 for all construction updates or log onto the NTTA website for lane closure information.  Additionally, customers may sign up for NTTA’s weekly Cashless Tolling e-newsletter.

Which structures have changed?

New overhead toll gantries replaced the toll plazas and toll booths.

Why were toll gantries added to the Keller Springs Road ramps that were not already tolled?

The relocation of the main lane toll plaza at Keller Springs Road required the relocation of the toll transaction point from the ramps north of Keller Springs Road to the ramps south of Keller Springs Road. Following the conversion to cashless tolling on Dec. 11, the old plaza on the ramps north of Keller Springs were deactivated and removed.

What if I don’t drive on toll roads very often? Is there an option other than getting a TollTag?

Yes, but at a higher toll rate. NTTA offers ZipCash, a pay-by-invoice option at higher rates for customers who do not want to take advantage of a TollTag.  When a motorist without a TollTag drives through tolling points, high-speed cameras take digital images of the license plate, and the tolls are billed to the registered owner of the vehicle.  ZipCash customers pay toll rates that are 50 percent higher than TollTag customers.  A premium is added to each toll to cover the costs of processing and collection.

Getting a TollTag is always the most cost effective and convenient option for paying tolls. The $40 balance on a TollTag account never expires, and the savings always applies on all NTTA roads.

How long will it take to get my first ZipCash invoice?

ZipCash customers receive invoices for their tolls based on their toll usage, and invoices are mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle. ZipCash customers will receive an immediate invoice after 30 transactions. Customers with five to 19 transactions will be billed every 30 days. Customers with four or less transactions will be billed 30 days after they reach their fifth transaction.  ZipCash invoices can be paid online, by mail or phone, or in person at the NTTA Customer Service Center or a participating ACE Cash Express location. Learn more about the TollTag and ZipCash billing process.

Can I pay before I get an invoice in the mail?

Yes, but only for ZipCash payments, not violation payments. Simply call NTTA Customer Service at 972.818.6882, provide the license plate information, and you will be allowed to pay for the tolls you have accrued prior to an invoice being sent.

What if I travel on toll roads in a rental or loaner vehicle?

Although rental car companies have varying toll payment methods, the NTTA offers Zip-Pass as a short-term method for visitors to pay for tolls in rental vehicles or personal vehicles. An NTTA Zip-Pass account allows motorists to avoid added fines, fees and opt-in costs charged by rental car companies and assures tolls are paid on time while driving a rental car or visiting Dallas/Fort Worth in a personal vehicle. Customers must call NTTA Customer Service at 972-818-NTTA (6882) to open a Zip-Pass account.

Various rental car companies share vehicle information with the NTTA, while others offer an optional plans to their customers at the time of rental. Please ask your rental car company about its individual toll policies. If the NTTA does not have an agreement with the rental car company and the customer opts out of the rental company’s toll policy, the driver may be subject to NTTA fees and rental agency fines.

If you have a hard-cased TollTag, you may temporarily remove your TollTag from your vehicle and place it in your rental car after updating your TollTag account with the rental vehicle’s information either online or by contacting the NTTA Customer Service Center at 972-818-NTTA (6882). Afterward, you must remember to update your account again with your regular vehicle information. This option is not available to customers with sticker TollTags because removing the sticker will cause irreparable damage TollTag.

What about people from out of state who do not have TollTags? How do they pay?

The NTTA currently partners with a third party to acquire out-of-state vehicle information. The NTTA aggressively pursues all tolls owed, whether the vehicle is registered in Texas or another state.  The NTTA also offers Zip-Pass as a short-term method for visitors to pay for tolls in rental vehicles or personal vehicles. Call NTTA Customer Service at 972.818.NTTA (6882) to open a Zip-Pass account.

What if I drove on a toll road and did not realize I would not be able to pay cash? What can I expect to receive in the mail in terms of my payment?

A ZipCash invoice will be mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle. Learn more about the TollTag and ZipCash billing process.
